Home Orthodontic Instructions Forsus Springs

FORSUS SPRINGS

What is the Forsus spring?

A special spring appliance has been installed onto your braces as part of an overall treatment plan prescribed by Dr. Hodges. The Forsus appliance is specifically designed to help move your teeth to your doctor’s recommended position. Forsus springs are used to correct overjet by encouraging forward movement of the lower teeth and backward movement of the upper teeth. These springs are used in conjunction with braces and are worn for 4-6 months. In some cases, this may help reduce the need for you to wear headgear, elastics, or have extractions of permanent teeth. It works around the clock, using continuous gentle forces to provide as efficient a treatment time as possible. Unlike rubberbands or headgear, you do not have to remember to wear it.

FORSUS SPRINGS QUESTIONS

How will the Forsus spring make me feel?

As with any orthodontic appliance worn inside the mouth, some discomfort or irritation may occur. Usually this will resolve over the first week. Call us if discomfort or irritation continues without improvement or if a sore develops in your mouth.

How do I eat with the Forsus spring?

Always be careful about what you eat. Avoid hard or sticky foods and be sure to reduce your food into smaller pieces. Brushing is always recommended after every meal. Take special care when brush your teeth to avoid dislodging the Forsus.

How does the Forsus spring attach? What if it comes loose?

The Forsus attaches to the upper molar band, a rod attaches to the lower wire. If the spring and the rod separate by wide opening during eating or other activity (yawning, singing), you can try to slide them back together. By opening moderately and compressing the spring, the rod can be placed back into the spring and reattached. However, If any part comes completely loose from your mouth, it is important to keep the part and bring it to the office for repair.

The Forsus appliance is designed to withstand normal intraoral forces and constant use. But like all orthodontic appliances, it can be damaged or broken, especially if appropriate care is not taken.

How do I open and close with the Forsus spring attached?

The Forsus appliance will accommodate normal mouth opening for eating and speaking. It is recommended, however, that you try not to open your mouth extremely wide while you are wearing your appliance, otherwise it may deform, separate or loosen a molar band, requiring a return visit to the orthodontist’s office.

What if the Forsus is rubbing my cheek or I am biting on the spring?

In the beginning, it is normal to have small ulcers that may develop. You were given some cotton rolls to place between the spring and your cheek. Be sure to use these regularly until you get used to the appliance.

The appliance is designed to stay away from your teeth when you open or close your mouth. If, for some reason, it gets between your teeth, do not bite on it. Biting on the appliance may deform or break it, or cause injury to the inside of your mouth.
